The component of the clutch that converts the pressure of the driver’s foot pressing the pedal into hydraulic pressure is called the master cylinder. More specifically, when the clutch pedal is pushed it moves the master cylinder inward, creating hydraulic pressure. This pressure then travels to the slave cylinder and eventually to the pressure plate where the clutch is disengaged. The most common issue with clutch master cylinders is leaks. The master cylinder is comprised of an aluminum housing, a piston, and several seals—if there is a leak in any of those seals, fluid will drain out and air will come into the aluminum housing.
